Today I have attended a training course to be a Mentor to a child in our local Primary School. The Program is called Kids Hope. It is run by World Vision and it is a program that involves our local church and the local school. The school matches up disadvantaged children from ages 5 - 12 who need someone to have one on one time with. The children may come from broken families for whatever reasons or one or both of parents are sick and have no time for the child, there are a myriad of reasons why the child needs a mentor. I volunteered my time for 1 hr per week to sit and be with the child. I see this as a positive way Christians are working in my community. The only thing is that we cant initiate talk about Jesus, God or the Church. We can only answer questions if the child asks. This restriction is due to the powers that be that run the schools, but hopefully and with Gods help the Christians will win out in the end and make a positive impression on the child in a way God will be glorified. I am excited and enthusiastic about this program, it will start early October for the 4th term of school. Does any one in Des Moines have such a similar program and how does it work there?
